anamed Malawi newsletter No 1 - August 2005
anamed Malawi newsletter No 2 - January 2006
The following is the 2006 report from Nelson Moyo, who coordinates much of the work of anamed in Malawi.
Date: January 2007 To: All anamed supporters, particularly anamed Malawi From: Nelson Moyo Subject: 2006 ANAMED MALAWI REPORT
Dear Sylvia and all friends,
Warm greetings from anamed Malawi!
It is with pleasure that I submit this annual report to you as our partners. The year 2006 was a blessed one as we saw many activities being done.
First, I would like to point out the growing of medicinal plants and using them on our ailments.
- Moringa stenopetala is now growing next to Moringa oleifera.
- Passiflora incarnata is also rejoicing in the Mama Matanda medicinal Garden.
- The air potato and other trees are really making the garden to be a demonstration one with Artemisia annua anamed (A-3) and Cymbopogon citratus as the giants!
We had chances of training people both at Chongoni and outside. A number of Non-Governmental Organisations brought their participants either for a day or a week, which made the work easier. I give thanks to them and their organizations:
- Save the Children came with two groups for a day’s visit and are planning to organise a seminar.
- St. Anne’s Anglican Hospital visited us with two Germans who showed interest in establishing Artemisia garden in Nkhotakota district.
- The American Peace Corps Volunteers were coming in groups.
As is the tradition of anamed, these people were asked to open their own gardens.
Some of the organisations which sent participants were as follows:
2006 Feb 6-11 24 delegates African Pastors Fellowship July 20-27 27 delegates Norwegian Church Aid World Vision Liwonde Emmanuel International / Evang. Baptist Sept 4-9 40 delegates (ladies) Napham Nov 26-Dec 1 18 delegates African Pastors Fellowship Dec. 19-23 20 delegates Evangelical Lutheran Devel. Serv.
All the groups were positive, but I noted special enthusiasm from the Pastors and was encouraged as they are people in authority taking care of many people.
The Norwegian CA brought members from different religious bodies including the Muslim Association from all over the country. The Napham (National Association of People Living with HIV/Aids in Malawi) brought their members from support groups in Lilongwe. Dee Watts, Nellie Phiri, Grace Swira, and Humphreys Madise helped with facilitation.
OUTREACHES
Opportunities were there again for outreaches whereby we had to train people and attended to some patients. Below are some of the places visited:
- Mthandiza C.C.A.P Church - training home based care takers
- Chifundo Herbal Project of the Catholic Church in Balaka
- World Vision Liwonde
- Emmanuel International Liwonde
- Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) - elite girls from different secondary schools in Malawi led by Dee Watts and friends
- Zomba Catholic Health Commission
- World Vision Senzani
- Dedza Catholic Health Commission - people living with HIV/Aids
- Catholic Health Commission Palliative Care workshop in Lilongwe
OTHER MEANS OF TEACHING
There have been efforts from different groups to educate people through the media. The Story Workshop had 30 minute presentations on two radios – MIJ and JOY. The radios offered free air time. We are glad that many people we could not reach got information and the RESULTS being many people phoning or writing to us. Healing has been given to people from afar. Humphreys was busy assisting the patients mostly from the southern region who heard of anamedâ€s mercies.
VILLAGERS SURROUNDING CHONGONI
It would be unfair for anamed Malawi to serve people from afar leaving the nearby villagers. What we have seen is that more and more people are putting their interest in herbal medicine after being disappointed by what is currently happening in our hospitals - either being expensive or no medication or no attendant.
SPECIAL REPORT OF INTEREST
It is being said more and more about the wonders of A-3 and Moringa on Aids. We have reports of one family that is said to be HIV negative. The husband came here for a seminar with World Vision and he showed interest in wanting to know if anamed could provide any recipe which is safer and effective. What else could we provide than A-3 and Moringa? Of course there are others but I am convinced that this recipe is of far much better help. Thanks to anamed in general!!!!
NATIONAL COMMITTEE MEETINGS
Our meetings were somehow irregular. Not all the planned days were covered and none of the meetings were attended by all members. Thanks to our God for the brains that contributed a lot during the meetings. The meetings were held in different places like Lilongwe, Dedza, and Blantyre and we agreed to keep rotating like that.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE MEETINGS
- Book translations
- Opening of Anamed Zomba Branch to involve Botanical gardens and Chancellor College
- Newsletters to be distributed promptly
- Training of Trainers
- Humphreys Madise reported that has been involved in palliative care with cancer people and the dieting
- Thyolo Hospital Staff visited Chris Walkers place
- Kristof Nordin to produce a film on Permaculture and Anamed activities
- Dr. Alex leaving for Germany will leave a gap as he was instrumental in Newsletters
PARTICIPATION IN SEMINARS OUTSIDE MALAWI
We were privileged to have Dee and Humphreys attend the Musoma seminar in Tanzania. Myself the Kiteto one and Dee went to Zimbabwe. We learned a lot from these seminars and we thank God for the experience gained!!!
LOCALISING ANAMED
We have been working hard towards localising anamed works by training people from the grassroots to ensure that the poor people benefit from anamed. We know that it is time consuming and expensive but we will do what we can manage to pass on and do the Paul-Timothy principle. We will train much on district levels and let the districts be responsible for themselves.
THANKS
We give our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Martin (Hans-Martin Hirt, founder of anamed) for his untiring communication. We do not forget Sylvia in her diligence in communicating despite her being extraordinarily busy with studies and works. Her encouraging notes kept on fueling us. What can we say of the entire team of the Friends of Anamed Malawi for all your thoughts and prayers for us? You are special to our work. Keep it up please!!
CONCERNS
We have been torn and moved by Celiane’s situations in Haiti and her gentle reactions. May the Lord give her strength to rejoice in the Lord. Mama Lisselote’s family issue of sickness again is something to be in the hands of the Lord. Your joy is ours and your sorrow ours.
WELCOME
We welcome all of you to International anamed seminar at chongoni from 29th July to 5th August 2007.
May God bless all of you.
Your co-worker,
Nelson Moyo
